Why Wisdom Teeth Are Prone to Breaking

Wisdom Teeth Palisades Surgical Arts CA 90272Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of trouble for some people. In fact, there are many who will experience intense pain due to the way they grow or become “impacted”. For this reason, many of our patients come to us in order to find out what can be done.

In cases like this, we often recommend that the wisdom teeth be removed. This usually makes things easier as there often isn't enough space in the mouth. There is also a further risk they pose: wisdom teeth are prone to breaking.

Your Wisdom Teeth: Why They Break

In general, human teeth need to be cleaned and maintained in order to avoid cavities and decay. The same can be said for wisdom teeth, which in essence aren't really that different to normal teeth. The only real difference is their positioning, since they happen to be at the far back of the mouth.

This means that for many people, it is often difficult to reach them with a toothbrush and they are easily forgotten. Over time, plaque will build up on the teeth. Plague, as you probably know, is what can end up causing tooth decay in the long run.

When eating, bits of food can also easily get stuck to the wisdom teeth. Again, picking these pieces of food out of the teeth can be very difficult. Sometimes pieces large and small will get stuck there for months and therefore they’ll be far, far more prone to breaking.

Most of the time, we recommend that the teeth are removed. This is something that you as a patient also have to consider. If you have questions regarding this procedure then make sure to come to us. We are more than happy to answer questions and help.
