Do You Need to Worry About Osteonecrosis in Your Jaw?

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Do You Need to Worry About Osteonecrosis in Your Jaw?Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare, but serious condition, in which the cells of the jaw bone start to die, and it can be caused by medicines used to strengthen bones, such as the ones used to treat osteoporosis.

What Can Cause the Jaw Bone to be Damaged?

One of the reasons for the jaw bone to become weaker or get damaged, is periodontitis where the bacteria gradually eat away the jaw bone. If left untreated, periodontitis can cause severe oral problems and, in some cases, affect the jaw bone.

In addition, biohosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition that affects patients who receive intravenous and oral forms of biophosphonate therapy, to treat several conditions that affect the bones. This condition can also be caused by trauma or injury to the jaw.

Symptoms of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

•  Having a bone that is visible in your mouth.
•  Loose teeth.
•  Inflammation or infection in the gums accompanied by pain or swelling.
•  Gums or sockets that don't heal after dental work.

Preventing Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

•  Brushing and flossing your teeth every day to reduce the risk of infection.
•  Let us know if you have bleeding gums, pain or a potential infection in your mouth.
•  Get removable dentures checked and adjusted as needed.
•  Let us know if you will be starting treatment for breast cancer and we will do a thorough cleaning and dental exam.

Treatment for Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Osteonecrosis of the jaw can be treated with antibiotics, oral mouth washes, and appliances such as retainers. It is difficult to predict who will get osteonecrosis of the jaw because it is so rare, but tooth extraction and root canals can make a patient more susceptible to getting osteonecrosis and you should discuss that with our dentist.

If you have any questions about issues with your jaw, please don't hesitate to ask us!
