Replacing All Your Teeth: Know Your Options

Losing your teeth is a serious problem that can greatly impact not only the appearance of your smile, but the functions of your mouth, your health, and your quality of life. Tasks that were once done without thinking about them (eating, speaking), quickly become a major challenge. Being unable to properly bite and chew your food can lead to issues with digestion and your overall nutrition. Trouble speaking can lead to issues communicating with those around you. Tooth loss also has effects under the gum line as well. When you lose teeth, your jawbone naturally begins to grow weaker. As it does, it begins to change shape, altering the shape of your face. Your cheeks sink in, wrinkles form, and you begin to look years older than you are. While dental implants are a popular choice for replacing missing teeth, their success depends upon the health of your jawbone. The bone that is too weak cannot support the titanium rods needed to secure your teeth in place. A weak jawbone does not mean implants are out, however. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we can provide you with the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.

The Latest Option for Tooth Replacement

Dental implants are the newest addition to replacing missing teeth and have quickly become one of the most popular options. They consist of three parts—the implant (a small, titanium rod), the abutment (the connector), and the crown (your replacement tooth). Implants require a surgical procedure, during which time the titanium rods are placed into your jawbone. As you heal, the bone fuses with the titanium, a process called osseointegration. This process turns the rods into the roots, which then support your new teeth.

What is the All-on-4® Treatment Concept?

Diagram of all on 4 dental implants from oral surgeon office in Pacific Palisades, CA.Usually, when implants are being used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, we use 6 to 8 dental implants. These implants are placed in your jaw, according to your customized treatment plan (which is based on your digital images). When you have too much bone loss, however, you may be lacking sufficient bone to support all of these implants. Unfortunately, the failure of even just one implant can lead to the failure of the entire restoration.

Instead of being relegated to dentures, we offer the All-on-4® Treatment Concept. With this treatment, the success of your restoration relies more on the strategic placement of the implants used, rather than the actual number used. In the case of this treatment, only four implants are used to support an entire arch of replacement teeth. Two of the implants are placed vertically toward the front of the jaw. This area naturally contains more bone mass. The other two implants are placed at the back of the jaw (one on each side). These implants are inserted at a 45-degree angle, which enables the implants to make as much contact as possible with the available bone mass. When placed in the upper jaw, this angle also enables us to avoid piercing the sinus cavities. Once you have healed, you can enjoy a strong, stable set of replacement teeth, and avoid the need for traditional dentures.

The Benefits of the All-on-4® Treatment Concept

The All-on-4® Treatment Concept has several benefits:
•  Patients with bone loss are still able to enjoy the many benefits of dental implants, including permanence, ease of care, greater comfort, improved aesthetics, and more.
•  Implants help to stop further bone loss.
•  Fewer implants mean less surgery.
•  Healing time is reduced.
•  You avoid other surgical procedures such as bone grafts and sinus lift surgeries.
•  You avoid the need for traditional dentures.

If you are missing teeth, but do not have the bone mass necessary to support the implants needed for a regular implant supported dentures, you may be a candidate for the All-on-4® Treatment Concept. Contact Palisades Surgical Arts at (424) 346-0955 to schedule your consultation today.
