Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Fish tank at oral surgeon's office in Pacific Palisades, CA.At Palisades Surgical Arts, our goal is to make sure all of our patients receive the very best care. For patients in need of a prosthetic tooth replacement, that usually means dental implants. To receive a dental implant, there must be a sufficient amount of bone in a person’s jaw. Patients that do not have an adequate amount of bone may be eligible for pre-prosthetic surgery. Pre-prosthetic surgery allows us to address bone deterioration and provide a stable foundation for your future dental implant.

Bone Grafting

Modern bone grafting is a minimally invasive and relatively painless procedure. During a brief surgery, Dr. Moncayo will attach bone graft material to the deteriorated portion of the jaw. Graft material can come from several sources. In some cases, we can harvest from a bone-rich area of your body. Graft material can also come from a donor, such as another person or cow. In recent years, synthetic graft material has become increasingly popular.

The bone graft procedure is used to help you achieve a stronger and thicker bone structure. As new bone grows, the graft material will be completely absorbed and replaced. Depending on the size and severity of the deteriorated area, the growth of new bone can take a few weeks or several months. Read more about Bone Grafting

Sinus Lifts

Patients missing teeth in the posterior (back) region of their upper jaw may need to undergo a sinus lift to receive a dental implant. Less bone exists in this area of your jaw, making it more difficult to restore. A sinus lift will add bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars. The graft material is placed in between the bone and your maxillary sinuses, which are located on either side of your nose. To make room for new bone growth, Dr. Moncayo will gentle “lift” up the sinus membrane and place the graft material. Read more about Sinus Lift

Ridge Augmentation

A ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure used to widen the upper jaw. During the procedure, we will may a surgical division in the bone. The graft material is then placed into the divided area to foster new bone growth. Ridge augmentation can also be used to recreate the natural contour of the gums and jaw that may have deteriorated due to untreated tooth loss. In certain situations, a dental implant can be loaded immediately after the ridge has been augmented. In other situations, a patient may have to wait four months to a year to ensure the ridge has fully healed. Read more about Ridge Augmentation

Socket Preservation

Socket preservation is another form of ridge augmentation that is typically performed directly after a tooth extraction. Sometimes when a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone sockets may break and become unable to heal on its own. The previous height and width of the socket will continue to deteriorate. During the socket preservation procedure, Dr. Moncayo will place graft material directly into the socket of the removed tooth. Not only will this procedure ensure you have a healthy amount of bone, it will also help you avoid a very painful condition that can occur after a tooth extraction, known as dry socket.
