Why Do Teeth Require Splitting During Extractions?
Pacific Palisades, CA

Why Do Teeth Require Splitting During Extractions? There are many different reasons you may call our office asking about an extraction, whether you need to remove wisdom teeth or you have a broken or impacted tooth. Occasionally, the extraction will require surgery and the tooth may need to be split in order to be removed properly.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

Ideally, when you need to have a tooth extracted, we hope for the best, meaning that there is plenty of crown above the gum and the tooth can be easily removed with forceps. However, there are times when this is not possible, and you may require a surgical tooth extraction.

Tooth sectioning is a process where one of our surgeons cuts a tooth into pieces to make the removal easier. We use this technique if you have a tooth that is impacted. Generally, the molars. This helps us successfully remove a tooth with very little risk of damaging the nerves of the adjacent teeth.

If the root of your tooth that requires extraction is curved, this can mean that your tooth socket is unable to expand enough to successfully remove the tooth. By cutting the tooth into sections, we can easily remove one section at a time causing less facial trauma to your mouth and extracting the tooth without complication.

It Sounds Worse Than It Is
If the thought of having one of your teeth split prior to extraction gives you anxiety, please let us know. Of course, during oral surgery, you will be under close supervision by not only our surgeon, but our anesthesiologist as well.

We realize that tooth extraction and tooth sectioning can sound frightening and we are here to walk with you through every step of the journey.
