Signs Your Dental Implant Needs Repair

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Signs Your Dental Implant Needs RepairWhile implants are considered permanent restorations, that does not mean they may not need repair from time to time. The following information details when an implant may need repair.

Does Your Implant Require Repair?

If you notice that your implant has loosened, that is a big warning sign that you should have it checked and possibly replaced. Also, any redness or swelling around an implant is a strong indicator that a repair needs to be made. The two main issues that are related to implant repairs relate to peri-implantitis (a gum disease involving the use of implants) or implant failure. The inflammatory disease, peri-implantitis, affects the bone and gum tissue around an implant and leads to loss of the supporting bone. When this happens, it can cause the implant to loosen. The infection can trigger gum swelling, a change in gum color, gum bleeding, and sensitivity. When the infection worsens, it may result in a loose implant, and visual identity of the implant threads.

Complications Connected to Implant Failures

If your implant fails, it may also be caused from an incorrect placement of the implant. In this case, the implant may be placed at a wrong angle or from bone support that is insufficient. Sometimes, the dental cement used to attach a restoration may leak and irritate the gums. This irritation may lead to a bacterial infection. You may also experience implant failure if you have an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes. Because diabetes weakens the immune system, the bacteria around the implant may accumulate to the point an infection develops. Smokers also experience implant failure about twice as often as non-smokers because the chemicals in the smoke destroy the gum tissue and bone, and restrict circulation. The immune system response is also impaired when a person chooses to smoke.
