What if I Have Dental Trauma? How Soon Should I Come See A Surgeon?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
What if I Have Dental Trauma? How Soon Should I Come See A Surgeon? When patients suffer trauma, it can not only affect us physically but emotionally as well. And when that trauma occurs in the mouth, it can be even worse. There can be damage to their teeth in the form of chips, cracks, and even fractures. Damage could also occur to the soft tissues of the mouth including the tongue, inner cheek lining, gums, and lips. Trauma can not only cause pain but can greatly impact the way patients look.

Dental Trauma Description

Sometimes, following injuries, patients might not know if they should seek the care of a professional or not. Dental trauma is defined as an injury to one or more sections of the oral cavity. It could be damage to the upper and lower jaws, tooth sockets, teeth, tongue, or gums. Patients should self-evaluate their own oral cavities looking for cuts and abrasions as well as damage to their teeth.

Dental Trauma Symptoms

Many times, the trauma is severe enough to have physical damage. Patients can feel sharp edges of teeth that were broken or chipped in the trauma and can look in the mirror noticing that some teeth can move pretty easily. There can also be blood associated with the injuries as well. It should be noted, due to the fact that there is so much blood close to the surface of the gums when injuries occur to the mouth, there is a lot of blood.

Seeking Treatment

If there is visible damage to teeth, patients should definitely come in to see us for treatment. If they just bit their tongue or lip or inside of their cheek, they likely do not have to come in. It is a judgment call whether to seek professional help or not. If there is a pain but no outward signs of damage it might be indicative of some internal injury that warrants professional treatment.
