Do I Need a Crown Lengthening?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Do I Need a Crown Lengthening? One of the most versatile restorative dental appliances, crowns can replace and repair teeth which have been badly eroded, chipped or fractured. Every effort is made to save the tooth no matter the damage and crowns provide that very ability. They are placed on the biting surfaces of the damaged teeth to restore the normal biting function and jaw motion. If this was left unrepaired, it could put too much pressure on the TMJ which can cause damage to the joint and to the teeth. They can be shaped and colored to match the rest of the patient's natural teeth too.

What is Crown Lengthening?

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps which are placed on the top of a natural tooth. They are used to repair damaged teeth and to restore the appearance of a damaged tooth. The lengthening procedure can help the patient and takes less than an hour to complete during a single appointment. It entails the recontouring of the patient's gum tissue which, in turn, exposes more of the tooth's surface to receive a crown.

Why is it Necessary?

When there is not enough exposed surface of the tooth to readily accept a crown placement, this procedure may be required. This can happen naturally or when there is a trauma associated with a particular tooth. A crown lengthening exposes more of the tooth above the gums to allow for proper crown placement.

Some crown lengthening procedures are done merely to correct a cosmetic concern known as a gummy smile. This occurs when the gum tissue covers up too much of the tooth making them appear small.

A crown lengthening procedure can correct this, making the patient's teeth appear of normal size based on the shape and size of their face and oral cavity. This will greatly improve the overall appearance of the patient's smile effectively giving them a new one.

If you are unsure if you need a crown lengthening procedure, we are here to help. You can always reach out to us for any questions you may have.
