Types of Gum Biopsy

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Types of Gum BiopsyIf you are looking to get a gum biopsy, you should know that it is categorized into more than one type. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we perform the following types of gum biopsies.

Incisional Biopsy

This is the most common type of gum biopsy. In this method, a doctor will remove some part of your suspicious tissue and study it under a microscope. A reliable oral surgeon like Dr. Moncayo can determine whether the removed gum tissue contains any cancerous cells. They can also locate the cause behind cells and check whether they have spread to other parts of the body.

Excisional biopsy

In this biopsy, your doctor will remove a lesion or complete growth. It is carried out to remove an easy-to-reach and small lesion. Your doctor will take out the growth as well as some of the healthy tissue near to it.

Percutaneous biopsy

In this biopsy, your doctor will insert a specialized needed through your skin. There are two forms of this biopsy: core needle biopsy and fine needle biopsy.
A core needle biopsy offers more tissue than a fine needle biopsy. It is carried out when the doctor needs a bigger sample for making a diagnosis. On the other hand, a fine needle biopsy is ideal for lesions that are easily visible and can be felt.

What Happens After a Biopsy?

The tissue sample collected during the above-mentioned biopsies is sent to the laboratory, where a pathologist is tasked to review the tissue. They will inspect the sample via a microscope and locate abnormalities or signs of cancer. A report is then sent to your doctor.
