Travelling After Oral Surgery

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Travelling After Oral SurgeryHundreds of thousands of patients undergo oral surgery each year. Some of these procedures are relatively minor, such as tooth extractions or dental implants. Others such as jaw realignment surgery tend to be more extensive. Each oral surgery features a recovery period that varies depending on the type of surgery carried out. If you have recently had oral surgery, you may need to take some precautions before travelling.

At Palisades Surgical Arts, Dr. Moncayo and can inform you on everything you need to know about when traveling after an oral surgery.

Is it Safe to Travel After Oral Surgery

Most patients can safely take flights following an oral surgery. However, it is important to be aware of the healing process and how travel can affect it. There is a widespread belief that taking a flight after an oral surgery may cause bleeding or discomfort due to air pressure changes as the aircraft ascends and descends. However, the good news is that aircraft cabins are pressurized, so air pressure changes should not be a concern for flyers who have just had oral surgery.

Tips for Travelling After Oral Surgery

While air pressure changes should not be a concern for dental patients, there are other considerations that should be taken into account when travelling. This includes

•  Sitting near a bathroom so that you can change your gauze following a surgery earlier in the same day.
following a surgery earlier in the same day.
•  Rinsing with salt water every couple of hours or as recommended.
•  Taking soft or pureed foods with you to avoid eating hard, chewy, or acidic foods.

At Palisades Surgical Arts, Dr. Moncayo and will inform you about any measures you will need to take when travelling following your oral surgery.
