Posted on 5/24/2021 by Palisades Surgical Arts
How Sleeping and TMD Pain Are RelatedTMD, or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, is a condition that is associated with which there is an issue with the TMJ, or the temporomandibular joint. This joint is the one that connects the jaw bone to the skull. It is one of the most complex joints in the body because it allows for lateral and vertical movement, which means we function by moving it up and down, and side to side. When this joint becomes damaged, it can affect your sleep.

TMD and Sleep

TMD does not only affect your sleep, but can also be impacted during sleep if you're prone to bruxism or grinding your teeth during sleep. TMJ disorder have been linked to sleep disorders such as sleep apnea as well. TMD pain or discomfort can be found in the face, neck, and shoulders. It can also create headaches, earaches, and pain behind the eyes. This is because the TMJ is used significantly throughout the day, while talking and eating, and is also associated with emotion. A TMD can impact your ability to fall asleep, just as any pain associated with the body can impact sleep, however TMD pain is harder to treat with simple remedies and may create pain or discomfort in other areas. Bruxism is a common TMD symptom, and can interrupt sleep. Bruxism puts extra pressure on the teeth and jaw, and my increase discomfort during sleep, making it hard to stay asleep. Even the stress caused by TMD discomfort can make it difficult to rest, especially if you are not able to eat properly or comfortably.

While TMD is associated with the mouth and jaw, it creates discomfort in many other areas of the body. It can be difficult to get a restful night's sleep in lieu of symptoms experienced with TMD. If you have questions about treatment, or concerns related to a TMD, please give our office a call and we'll be happy to help.
