IV and Oral Conscious Sedation
Pacific Palisades, CA

If you have any anxiety associated with oral surgery and other dental procedures, you are not alone. Many patients choose sedation dentistry to manage fears and phobias so they can receive the oral care they need to maintain a healthy mouth. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we offer several forms of sedation to provide a safe, comfortable, and pain-free experience for our patients. Two of the most popular options are IV and oral conscious sedation.

What is IV Sedation?

During Intravenous or IV Sedation, we administer a sedative through your vein, allowing the medication to take hold quickly. It is one of the most popular choices among patients today. It is also commonly known as “twilight anesthesia,” because you are put in a state between consciousness and sleep. You will maintain your ability to understand and respond to verbal commands; however, most patients have little or no recollection of the procedure.

We often recommend IV sedation for oral surgery procedures, such as dental implant installations, long and complex surgeries, wisdom tooth extractions, and other invasive treatments. Although the dental procedure may take a couple of hours, it may feel as if it only takes minutes.

IV sedation makes it easy to monitor and tailor the amount of sedative used for each specific patient, reducing the risk of side effects and other complications. We will provide supplemental oxygen through your nasal cavity, and monitor your vital signs closely, both during and after the procedure.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation, or enteral sedation, involves the administration of oral sedative drugs in the form of a pill or liquid. Often, it is used in conjunction with nitrous oxide gas. Like IV sedation, you will be in a depressed state of consciousness. The most common drugs for oral conscious sedation include diazepam, lorazepam, triazolam, zaleplon, and hydroxyzine.

We typically recommend oral conscious sedation for patients with generalized anxiety, generalized fear of dentistry, prior oral trauma, or a fear of needles and sharp instruments. You may still be awake, but the sedative will eliminate your anxieties. The entire process is simple and comfortable.

The Benefits of IV and Oral Conscious Sedation

•  When compared to oral or inhalation sedation, IV offers a deeper level of sedation.
•  IV sedation takes effect quickly because it is introduced directly into your bloodstream. Other forms of sedation may take longer.
•  Patients who choose IV sedation have a faster recovery time than those that undergo general anesthesia or oral conscious sedation.
•  Patients with severe anxiety or a sensitive gag reflex will benefit from being put in a depressed state of consciousness.
•  IV sedation can be an excellent alternative to general anesthesia because it is cost effective and involves fewer complications.

The Benefits of Oral Conscious Sedation

•  Oral Conscious Sedation is the most cost-effective form of sedation.
•  Oral Conscious Sedation does not involve the use of needles, making it easy to administer.
•  Most patients experience an amnesic effect, meaning they will remember little or none of the procedure.
