Pacific Palisades, CA

At Palisades Surgical Arts, one of our primary concerns is providing a safe and comfortable environment. That is why we offer several sedation methods for our patients. Sedation helps us eliminate pain, discomfort, and any fear or anxiety related to surgery or other potentially uncomfortable procedures. Patients with Palisades Surgical Arts have three options: general anesthesia, IV sedation, and oral conscious sedation.

Are You a Candidate for Sedation?

Most patients will qualify for some form of sedation. Your overall health, such as your physical and mental well-being, are an important part of safely undergoing certain types of sedation. In some circumstances, we may ask you to receive clearance from your general physician. Cardiac disease, diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory ailments must be addressed before we proceed with sedation. Dr. Moncayo will perform a thorough review of your medical and dental history to ensure that sedation is right for you.

We recommend sedation for patients that:

•  Experience a high level of anxiety or have dental phobias
•  Experience a choking sensation or have difficulty opening their mouth for an extended period
•  Must undergo a complex procedure that would otherwise take multiple visits
•  Have an allergy or biochemical reaction to local aesthetic that renders it ineffective
•  Have difficulty sitting still during a procedure
•  Have any other special health care requirements that may require the use of sedation

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a form of sedation that is typically associated with complex surgical procedures. Many oral surgeries may not require the use of general anesthesia because the surgeries are less invasive. During general anesthesia, you are completely asleep and unarousable, even by painful stimulation. It is administered directly into the vein, and sometimes with the possible inhalation of gaseous anesthetic. When administered, it depresses the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and therefore requires an anesthesiologist to monitor vital signs such as your heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse. We will also ensure that your airway is protected since your protective cough reflex will not be operative. We typically recommend general anesthesia for patients with a high tolerance for certain medications, extreme dental trauma, complex oral surgeries, and in rare instances, extreme anxiety.

IV and Oral Conscious Sedation

For most patients, IV and oral conscious sedation may be the better option when it’s time to undergo surgery. Intravenous sedation is another common method to reduce anxiety and eliminate pain. During IV sedation, you are placed in a sort of twilight zone—a depressed level of consciousness. You are not fully asleep and not fully awake. You will be able to respond to stimulus and answer questions but may have little or no recollection of the procedure. IV sedation allows us to reduce the risk of complications and negative side effects because you need no medical assistance to maintain breathing and heart function.

Oral conscious sedation involves the oral ingestion of an anti-anxiety medication and can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you may be given a pill that is akin to the strength of a single valium. You will be drowsy, but awake. A larger dose is given to patients who require a moderate level of sedation.
