Socket Preservation

Dental Implants - High-Tech Teeth

Your teeth perform many essential functions, including biting and chewing your food, enabling you to speak properly, and providing you with a beautiful, confident smile. Because your teeth are so important, it is essential that you take good care of them. However, it is still possible to face dental health issues that place your teeth at risk. When your teeth are at risk, all options are explored to save them. Sometimes, though, a damaged tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted. When this happens, an empty socket is left behind. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we can preserve the health of your jawbone following an extraction with socket preservation.

Why might a tooth require extraction?

Your teeth have many essential responsibilities, including biting and chewing, controlling air when you speak, and giving you a beautiful, confident smile. For these reasons, repairing damaged teeth is important. However, there are some instances in which saving a damaged tooth is not possible, and an extraction becomes necessary:
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Severe gum disease.
•  Infections in which a root canal is not possible.
•  You have had a root canal, but it failed.
•  Your tooth is cracked, split, or otherwise damaged below the gum line (ruling out the possibility for a crown).

The Importance of Preserving Sockets

One very important function of your teeth that is often not thought about is the job of keeping your jawbone strong and healthy. When you chew, the roots of your teeth stimulate the jawbone, sending messages to the body to send nutrients. When you lose teeth, stimulation is also lost. As a result, your jawbone begins to grow weak. The bone begins to change shape, altering your bite and causing a whole host of other oral health issues, including misaligned teeth, bruxism, jaw pain, and more. It also changes the shape of your face, causing you to appear older.

What, exactly, is socket preservation?

Artwork in hallway at oral surgeon's office in Pacific Palisades, CA.Socket preservation is a procedure that is performed following a tooth extraction. It is a procedure that involves using bone graft material to fill in the empty socket. This is done to prevent the existing bone from collapsing into space. A consultation before your extraction and socket preservation will help us to determine the best type of bone graft to use. Depending on your situation, we may use your bone material, bone material from a donor, or synthetic materials.

Socket Preservation Procedure

Your socket preservation is done immediately following your tooth extraction. Incisions are made in your gum tissue, exposing the space. We then fill the socket with the bone graft material. Your gums are then sutured closed over the space, and you can go home to heal. Once you have healed from your socket preservation, we can then discuss replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant.

Socket Preservation Benefits

There are several benefits associated with socket preservation:
•  The strength and integrity of your jawbone are protected.
•  The shape of your face is protected, which enables you to avoid premature aging.
•  More of your natural bone is preserved, which helps to avoid the need for a more invasive bone graft later.
•  Dental implants can be placed shortly after healing.

If you are in need of a tooth extraction, a socket preservation can help to protect the strength and integrity of your jawbone, making it possible for a dental implant to be placed. Call Palisades Surgical Arts at (310) 459-0014 today for more information or to schedule your consultation.
